Seghesio Home Ranch Zinfandel - California, USA

In 1893, newlyweds Edoardo and Angela Seghesio made their new home on the western edge of Alexander Valley.  Already winemaker for the largest winery in Sonoma County, Edoardo recognized a great vineyard site.  In 1895 he planted the Home Ranch and began a lineage of four generations of grape growers in Sonoma County.

“Home Ranch is one of those special sites where the convergence of soil and climatic conditions interact to create wines of complexity and regional distinctiveness. Warm, sunny days provided the heat needed for colour and flavour development. The shallow, non-fertile, clay soils slow the vigor of vine growth, producing smaller-berried clusters complete with vibrant dark-fruit qualities, mineral spiciness and extraordinary richness.

Harvesting concentrated, evenly ripened fruit is fundamental, and requires constant diligence in the vineyard. Equally important is the development of ripe tannins, so that, during fermentation, tannin extraction integrates an underlying smoothness that leaves a lasting impression. 2004 is yet another outstanding vintage – I believe we are on to something! Salute!”
