Wild Rock Gravel Pit Red, Merlot/Malbec - Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
| When we started Wild Rock, we promised
ourselves that we were going to make some of New Zealand's most
distinctive and affordable wines. We weren't going to be insular. We
weren't going to hunker down in one place and just make the best wines
that we could from that place. Oh no. What we wanted to produce - and
what we do produce - are wines that represent the best flavours of New
Zealand, from north to south, east to west. |

| This wine is named after the gravel pit
that operated in the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing District. The
home of our Gravel Pit Red almost ended up in the hands of a mining
company, but a hard-core group of local vintners got in their way.
Thanks to a courageous protest by the neighbourhood wine crew the land
was saved for vines.
The Gimblett Gravels is a fantastic little growing area where red grapes especially thrive. This is due to the amount of stones in the soil that help with heat retention and water drainage. This combined with the Hawkes Bay great climate means that we consistently achieve full ripeness. The 2005 reds are the stuff that dreams
are made of! Perfect ripening conditions over summer and valiant work in
the vineyard when rain plagued us at vintage have given us legendary
reds. |

| Mostly Merlot with a seasoning of Malbec to round it off. The warmth of the vineyard and stony soils help produce very ripe grapes, which make this wine an absolute pearler. Extremely dark, with ripe black berry fruit and plummy varietal characters with aromas of chocolate. Gripping tannins and a lively persistent finish make for a sublime everyday drinking wine. Enjoy! |
