Pendarves Verdelho - Hunter Valley, Australia
| Pendarves Estate is a 13 hectare (32 acres) vineyard situated on 20 hectares (50 acres) of land in the lower Hunter Valley to the north of Sydney, in an area geographically known as the Belford Dome of Limestone. With less rainfall and its unique soil, Pendarves produces wines with great fruit intensity. It is owned by Dr. Philip and Belinda Norrie who bought the land in 1986. The vineyard was planted in 1988 and 1989, with the first vintage being in 1991. | ||
| It was discovered through Dr Norrie's interest in medical and wine history that Sydney Cove and not Farm Cove as previously thought, was the site of the first vines planted in Australia, hence the significance of the lithograph adorning the label of the Verdelho by kind permission of the State Library of N.S.W. Sydney, Australia. | ||
| Pendarves "flagship" wine is light
yellow with green shades in colour, showing combined fruit characters of
lemon and grapefruit with musk aromas, produced from small berries.
The palate has medium richness showing tropical fruit with grapefruit
and citrus, good lingering flavours balanced by crisp acidity, finishing
with almost sweet grassy musk flavours.
Delicious with Australian seafood, Verdelho's spicy flavour component is also an excellent accompaniment to Asian influenced food styles. |
